Descaling your espresso machine is essential to keep it in good working order as well as to ensure all parts of the machine remain clean. You will know when you need to descale the Barista Express™ when the Clean/Descale light gets illuminated.

Here’s how to use the integrated descaling program and professionally clean your machine.

Directions:
1. Empty the drip tray and water tank, then remove the water filter.
2. Dissolve one packet of the descale solution with one litre of warm water and pour the solution into the water tank and re-insert into the machine.
3. Press and hold the ‘Power’ button and ‘2-cup’ button simultaneously to enter ‘Descale’ mode. The machine will begin heating up automatically with the ‘Power’ button flashing continuously.
4. The ‘Power’ button, ‘1-cup’ button, the ‘Clean/Descale’ indicator and the ‘Hot Water/Steam’ indicator will illuminate when the machine is ready to descale. Press the ‘1-cup’ button to start descaling the coffee component of the machine; this will take approximately 25 seconds with the ‘1-cup’ button flashing continuously. To stop the descaling process within 25 seconds, press the ‘1-cup’ button again.
5. To descale the steam and hot water components takes approximately 13 seconds and 8 seconds respectively. Descaling can be terminated prematurely by turning the ‘Steam dial’ to ‘Standby’. Descale the steam component by turning the ‘Steam dial’ left towards the ‘Steam’ icon.
6. Descale the hot water component by turning the ‘Steam dial’ to the right towards the ‘Water’ icon.
7. By now, half of the descaling solution should be in the water tank. To continue the descaling process, repeat the previous steps to completely empty the solution in the tank.
8. After descaling, remove the water tank and rinse thoroughly. Refill with fresh, cold water to the max line and insert into the machine. Repeat the steps again to further cleanse the machine of any residue from the descaling solution.
9. To finish, press the ‘Power’ button to quit the ‘Descale’ mode. All LED lights should then switch off.
