I was a little rushed making this because family is always around, so please excuse my "um's and, and-um-a's" I hope this demonstrates what you were wondering about this can opener.
The knife sharpener is not powered or automatic. To sharpen a knife: set the knife on the sharpener with the handle of the knife right up next to the sharpener, draw/pull the knife across the ceramic sharpener toward yourself, lift the knife and repeat the action.
