Ive been using the Bunn Coffee Makers for years. They eventually break, but my last one (in the picture) lasted eight years. I prefer the thermal carafe, as the coffee seems to keep its taste longer than on a hot plate.
Not only does the coffee taste better, but the hot water tank means your coffee is ready in just a couple of minutes.
For its price point, I expected this coffee maker to brew decent coffee. It lives up to that, but doesnt match the flavor pour-over coffee produces.
Its a pretty big machine, and takes up roughly the same space as Technivorm coffee makers. This Bunn isnt like a typical coffee maker. It has a water basin that stores water even when its not brewing.
This stored water is meant to be kept hot even when youre not brewing, so that the next time you brew coffee theres already hot water ready to go. Thats how it can brew a pot of coffee in 4 minutes.
What this means is youre supposed to leave the coffee maker plugged in and turned on all the time.
To me thats a huge waste of electricity, so I dont follow that recommendation. What I do instead is turn off and unplug the maker when Im done brewing coffee.
The next time I plan on brewing, I plug in and turn on the maker and let it reheat the water, which takes a little over 15 minutes. Then I grind my coffee, add more water to the maker, and let it do its thing.Getting the brewer started is quirky.
Like I mentioned above, theres water already in the machine thats going to be hot, but in order to get the brew going, you have to lift the lid and add MORE water up to the cup level you desire (see my pic of the water level measure of the machine).
Then you close the lid, which depresses this white tab and the brewing begins. The machine does a decent job of saturating the grounds evenly. It releases water through 5 spouts, which creates a star-like pattern on the grounds (see pic).
Cleaning the basket is easy and the thermal carafe is wide enough for people with smaller hands.
The carafe does do a good job of keeping the coffee hot for over an hour.I thought about returning this coffee maker because of its abnormal brewing method and considered getting the Moccamaster KBG 40 oz.
instead, but decided I didnt want to spend $300+. Im keeping this machine as Im satisfied with it enough. Definitely not a 5 star machine, but a solid 4 stars.
I havent had a Bunn for quite a few years now and I am REALLY loving it once again! I was a little concerned about the reviews stating they had problems with it running over but my experiences have been all 100% positive.
Once set up, it brews our full pot of coffee in 4 minutes or less, and it is delicious! Perfect! I am sold!Ive had thermal pots before and know that it helps to preheat the pot with hot water before you brew.
This is another step that wastes water and delays things so Ive not done it but one time. I really havent noticed a lot of difference when I dont, but maybe we just dont have to burn our mouth to be happy, though I do like my coffee hot, not warm.
It seems to stay at an acceptable temperature for at least 2 to 3 hours, if it lasts that long, but Ive had a cup after lunch that was still surprisingly hot.
