The Lowdown on Espresso Machine Thermostats

Many espresso machines use an analog bi-metal thermostat that regulates when the boiler kicks on or off using a fairly simple mechanism. This is what accounts for the variable temperature in…

How do you know when a thermostat goes bad? Is there a meter reading?

@n8yrn Oh cool! I have heard the guys talking about this on machines but
didn’t know they were so similar, functionally. – Kat

very interesting, thanks!

n8yrn says:

These look identical to over temperature switches and do a similar but
different job. Overtemp switches kickout over a certain temp just like
thermostat but once it is tripped it is done… You wind up replacing the
overtemp switch once it is triggered. This is a protection piece (like a
circuit breaker) in many coffee machines and espresso machines in case of a
“thermal event”. Just my 2 cents on your dime 😉 Nice interesting way to
show some of the internals… THANKS!!!

@MrMarkBartlett Thank you for sharing that with folks!! Much appreciated 🙂
